About Jake

Jake Gibson is a Research Data Curator at UC Berkeley Library and a Project Manager for the Virulent Hate Project. His research interests include data curation and repository management, digital humanities, critical media studies, and data justice. He received his M.S. in Library and Information Science at Pratt Institute and a B.A. in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at the University of Michigan.

With Virulent Hate, a University of Michigan digital humanities team documenting anti-Asian racism and Asian American activism during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jake has experience supporting faculty and undergraduate research, managing research data, building project websites, and information visualization.

Jake's work is grounded in an ethics of care and a belief in the value of collaboration. He was formally a Research and Instruction Librarian at Pratt Institute and an Adjunct Reference and Instruction Librarian at LaGuardia Community College. He also has a background in the performing arts and is passionate about all things experimental.
